Autum Equinox

Autum Equinox…a time when night and day stand equal in duration. A time to take stock or reflect on one’s life and what has come to evolve, what has come to pass and what needs more learning. We are entering the longer nights and colder weather. What do we need for the coming winter physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually? Ritual can be useful to focus our attention on these. You may like to: Burn Candles to watch the flame dance and reflect Write a Letter of Gratitude to yourself or another Release something from your life Meditation walk in nature Decorate Your Home Journal Or you may have something that works for you or that you have done. May there be gratitude and peace this equinox ...

The Therapy Journey

If you have entered therapy and been given up on because you don't seem to be 'improving' or 'getting better fast enough' or continuing self-harm, drugs, anti-social behaviour, depression, self-isolation (insert your own struggles here), it can be very debilitating, defeating, rejecting, (insert your own term here).   Forms of therapy that understand that these areas of your life that are not working may stem from past patterns that kept you going under traumatic or difficult circumstances (even if you don't remember them) can make all the difference.   Therapy that seeks the internal resources that are still there and can be connected with again, helps make the healing journey possible to wellness, health and wholeness.   If it is looking bleak or hopeless in your life, let's remind ourselves that...

The Conscious & the Unconscious

“But if we understand anything of the unconscious, we know that it cannot be swallowed. We also know that it is dangerous to suppress it, because the unconscious is life and this life turns against us if suppressed, as happens in neurosis. Conscious and unconscious do not make a whole when one of them is suppressed and injured by the other. Both are aspects of life. Consciousness should defend its reason and protect itself, and the chaotic life of the unconscious should be given the chance of having its way too - as much of it as we can stand. This means open conflict and open collaboration at once. That, evidently, is the way human life should be.” ― C.G. Jung So much of the unconscious drives us - and we...

The Year Ahead

Not many in-person groups next year but private groups (structured or informal)  are welcome to contact me. How does private group work ah…work? Many of you already know that I have been supporting people for a long time and that much of what I have studied and practiced is an experiential type of process that allows whatever is needing to emerge to come up safely and be processed or released or integrated. This means that what is focussed on is whatever people bring in to the space, rather than me providing the specific answers to issues. I provide the structure and guidance, then it is a group exploration that takes over and it may at times be relaxing, easy, messy, chaotic, stuck, exciting, boring, confusing, clarifying, amazing and any...

Freedom to Heal Your Way

We don’t fixate on any one modality or push any one formula expecting you to follow. With safe space your own healing process gets to emerge…often with surprising and unexpected ease. And we are good, very good, at safe space! It took me a long time to be able to say this but enough feedback, years of it,  gives me the confidence. As facilitators we are open to what it takes…for your healing for you… …and between us have a large range of modalities and techniques and understandings and skills, all underpinned by the co-creation of safe space and what that means for each individual. We provide the opportunity to feel safe enough to change in ways that are totally right for each individual. When...

Sojourner Reflection

During my two week sojourner of reflection and reset here at Iluka, I’ve taken the last ferry across the mighty Clarence River almost every sunset. It seems a metaphor for my life…. Even though I’ve fallen off the boat of life a few times and almost drowned; even though I have soared above and touched infinity: even though at times the anchor kept me stuck: most of the time… I have cleaned the decks and wiped my brow and rested at the bow and now and then…a rainbow…or a dolphin…or a string of moments encompassing all that life can bestow! Trust and breathe life…trusting friends…trust and breathe feelings…trusting the process Phoenix...

How To Recover From Shock

Many of us are getting battered by different surprises and shocks at the moment. What's it like for you? For me recently first came blankness, like I don't want to know about this, then some tense thoughts and habitual patterns that question just how will I get through this? What does this mean? What am I doing? These along with body reactions like gut churning and a sharp rise in heart rate...

Mike’s book list

I often get asked what books I recommend for people on their journey of healing. There are a few in the two Resources pages on this website, but here is a somewhat longer list: Some of the first books I read in this vein were by the psychiatrist and teacher M. Scott Peck, and they are still classics and a great starting point for many. Start with The Road Less Traveled - and then go on to read A Different Drum - a wonderful book about community; and People of the Lie - a classic work about the nature of evil. Basically I'd recommend anything he has written, and it is very approachable and readable. A few other classics Homecoming by John Bradshaw  - a great course in...
